PARAISO - CD soundtrack (debut album)

Oh, these Cubans! Whoever expects well-known salsa sounds from Madera Limpia (“pure wood”), though, is in for a surprise. Because the debut album, the soundtrack to the film “Paraiso”, not only uncovers our yearnings and waters the purest lust for life: the band from Guantanamo reinvents itself vigorously time and time again by mixing the traditional Changuy with their own hip-hop and reggae motifs. Their sound is modern and timeless at the same time. Their lyrics describe the hard everyday life in the hot East of the island: Sueno Canino: “… Last night I dreamt of an upside-down world, I thought I was a dog, but a dog is a dog. He lives without worries and feels no sorrow…” , the all-encompassing boredom: Verdad Global – “…everything’s more real.
I try to express my truth, only my global truth, feeling things that block my neurons. My self-esteem is on the ground, I repeat, it makes me sick, I’m in a hole, and please, God, help me get my feet back on the floor, so I can get there... I’m so bored...deadly boredom...”, or going back to the roots: Son de Nuevo Tipo: “…Let go off the crutch and the cane, and you can dance. My new ‘son’, it’s so rich. I want to spread it across the world in one second, listen to it!…” For Yasel, the leader of Madera Limpia, love and betrayal are two other major themes. He assumes the role of a wood seller and courts a beautiful woman with ambiguous allusions: La Lena – “…I bring you timber, for you, lady; I bring you cheap timber. Dry and hard timber, good to keep your fire going for hours, it produces less smoke and ashes, the perfect fit for your oven..” or sings his passion confidently in Loco por Comerte – „... Girl, I’m dying to eat you
dying to take a bite off you, have you. Give me a chance to make you feel differently.
I want to give you the chance that many have been denied. Many love me. I’m hot bread, honey, those who try me don’t discard me…”.
One can hear short excerpts from the film PARAISO between the Madera Limpia songs, like for example the engine of Rafael’s old Chevrolet chugging through the streets of Guantanamo, which seems to be chugging its last around every corner; or the folk song that Yasel and his uncle sing from one hill to the other in Yateras.
The PARAISO soundtrack is Madera Limpia’s first album, so it can also be enjoyed on its own. Through its uncommon poetry and departure from clichés, the film uncovers the roots of everyday life in Cuba, looks people straight in the eye and catches a strand of present-day life, which inspires our yearnings.

Ach, diese Kubaner! Wer aber bei der Musik von Madera Limpia (dt. „Reines Holz“) alt bekannte Salsa-Klänge erwartet, der wird überrascht sein. Denn das Debütalbum als Soundtrack zum gleichnamigen Film PARAISO weckt nicht nur unsere Sehnsüchte und versprüht die reine Lebensfreude, mehr noch: die Band aus Guantanamo erfindet sich kraftvoll und mitreißend immer wieder neu durch die Verschmelzung des traditionellen Changúis mit eigenen Hip-Hop- und Reggae-Motiven. Ihr Sound – modern und zeitlos zugleich. Ihre Texte beschreiben den harten Alltag im heißen Osten der Insel:
Sueño Canino –„... Heute Nacht träumte ich, die Welt steht auf den Kopf. Ich dachte, ich wär ein Hund, denn ein Hund ist ein Hund, lebt fröhlich ohne Sorge oder Klage ...“, die allumfassende Langeweile: Verdad Global – „...Es scheint doch wahr zu sein, ich versuche dir meine Wahrheit mitzuteilen, meine VERDAD GLOBAL, die mich benebelt. Meine Selbstachtung am Boden, wieder! Es macht mich krank, ich bin in einem Loch und bitte Gott, mich auf die Beine zu stellen ... um mich wiederzufinden. Tödliche Langeweile ...“ , oder die Reise zu den Wurzeln: Son de Nuevo Tipo – „ ...Weg mit der Krücke, weg mit dem Stock, wie toll wirst du tanzen zu meinem neuen Sound. Im Nu um die ganze Welt, ein süßer Sound, mein Rumbo, der neue Klang des Holzes – hörst du ihn?...“. Aber auch die Liebe und der Verrat ist ein Hauptthema von Yasel, dem Bandleader von Madera Limpia. In doppeldeutigen Anspielungen wirbt er als Holzverkäufer um eine schöne Frau: La Leña –„... Ich bring dir das Holz, das gute. Für dich Liebste, billig. Hartes Holz, macht gutes Feuer; mit wenig Rauch und Asche. Es hat die richtige Größe für deinen Ofen ...“, oder besingt selbstbewusst seine Leidenschaft in Loco por Comerte – „... Mädchen, will dich vernaschen, ich will dich fressen, dich beherrschen, du sollst dich anders fühlen, besser, denn andere haben nicht diese Chance. Ich werde von vielen geliebt, ich bin wie warmes Honigbrot, wer mich probiert, lässt nicht mehr los ...“.
Zwischen den Liedern von Madera Limpia sind kurze Einlagen aus dem Film PARAISO zu hören, wie z.B. den Motor des alten Chervrolets von Rafael, der durch die Straßen Guantanamos tuckert und an jeder Ecke seinen Geist aufzugeben scheint. Oder als Leitmotiv der Engel „La Fama“, der im Film allgegenwärtig zu sein scheint. Oder aber das Volkslied, gesungen von Yasel und seinem Onkel, von Hügel zu Hügel in Yateras.
Der Soundtrack PARAISO ist das erste Album von Madera Limpia, kann also unabhängig vom Film genossen werden. Der Film gibt durch seine Poesie, abseits eingetretener Pfade und jenseits des Klischees einen tiefen Einblick in die Ursprünglichkeit des kubanischen Alltags, schaut Menschen tief in die Augen und trifft damit einen aktuellen Nerv, der unsere eigenen Sehnsüchte anspricht.
